About Carole

Carole Hayman is a writer, producer and filmmaker. She was born in Kent, which has featured in her trilogy of novels, The Warfleet Chronicles. Her early work was with The Bristol Old Vic, The Royal Court and Traverse Theatres, from which she went on to become a founder member and first woman director of the Joint Stock Theatre Company. She was an Associate Director of the Royal Court Theatre, for which she directed many World Premieres.

Radio

On radio, she is well known as co-writer of the Radio 4 hit series Ladies of Letters with Prunella Scales and Patricia Routledge, which has run for nine series to date and is currently being developed for television. The last series, Ladies of Letters Go Green, aired on Radio 4 in March 2008 and another (series 10) is in development for 2009. BBC Worldwide publish all the Ladies of Letters audiobooks very successfully.

Publications

Carole has published and broadcast many short stories and pieces of cultural journalism, including features for the Independent, Guardian, Express, Sunday Times, Daily Mail and a regular column for the Saturday Independent, 'My Lofty Life'.

Film

Her first film as Producer/Writer 'f2point8' was made with support from the UK Film Council, was shortlisted for a BAFTA, and has shown at festivals round the world.

“Lofty Life” a short animated film, was completed in 2005 also with an award from the UK Film Council. it has appeared in film festivals world wide, including the LA Film Festival, Raindance, Clermont Ferrand, Positano, Dublin, Leeds, Cambridge and Reading. It is currently showing on various broadband websites, including Joost, Vuze, YouTube, Raindance.tv, Final Cut and is regularly shown on Sky’s Propeller TV. It is being developed as an animated TV series and graphic novel.

Books

Carole’s last novel, the political satire Hard Choices, was published in July 2003 by Aurora Metro Press and immediately shortlisted for the Silver Booker. It came out in paperback in 2004.

Gallery installations

Until recently Carole was an Arts and Humanities Research Council Fellow at King's College London where she has made a study on Women and Serial Killers. Called ‘No One Escapes’, this is now a fascinating four-screen Installation, intended for showing in galleries and at conferences. The installation is currently showing as part of the INDELIBLE: Every Contact Leaves a Trace exhibition at The Fabrica Gallery in Brighton. Several shorter edits exist – for showings at conferences and universities. A 45-minute edit has just been completed for showing at the BFI later in the year.

Writing activities

Carole runs regular Literary Salons in Brighton and takes part in workshops and seminars on the craft of writing. She is a regular speaker at Conferences and film and literary festivals. She is on the board of the Brighton & Hove Arts Commission and is a trustee of ACE RFO - New Writing South.
